STOP IT!
PRIME MINISTER David Thompson has appealed to Barbadians to stop bellyaching.
He made the call while addressing hundreds of people who turned up at Combermere School yesterday to hear Minister of Community Development and Culture Steve Blackett deliver the first in a series of 21 public Democratic Labour Party (DLP) constituency reports.
Thompson told the gathering, that included Government ministers, constituents and party supporters that they could learn from the way Haitians repeatedly responded to crises by not trying to apportion blame.
“I believe that a key ingredient necessary for moving this country forward is the fostering of the correct attitude among its people,” he said. “We need to stop the moaning and groaning and bellyaching. Barbados is a blessed place.”
Thompson said Barbadians and other Caribbean people had not endured what for the average Haitian has become a way of life, “yet we moan and groan about the hand we have been dealt . . . about our lot in life”.
Thompson said that the record of his two-year-old Government had not been perfect, but the administration had taken Barbados through an economic crisis to the point where “tomorrow is a little brighter than yesterday in respect of jobs and also in respect of the capacity of individuals to deal and cope with the cost of living”.
Earlier, during a 34-minute presentation, Blackett had detailed his stewardship in the St Michael Central constituency.
He spoke about his support for the elderly, schoolchildren, sports and cultural activities.
He listed among plans for the constituency, the building of a play park, the resurfacing of roads and the establishment of a group to create business opportunities.
There were no searching questions for Blackett as constituents asked fewer than a dozen questions related mainly to drainage, running water, accident compensation from insurance companies and accessing Government contracts for construction. (TY) (Nation News)
