TWO DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS Sir Roy Trotman, General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) is appealing to criminals to reduce their violent acts.

He has also asked shoppers to use caution as the new year is expected to be a challenging one.

Sir Roy made the special appeal to the criminal element on Monday during a press conference at the BWU headquarters, Solidarity House, where he urged Barbadians to be cautious in their spending and warned that the coming year “is going to be a difficult period”.

Citing crime as one of the most frightening challenges confronting Barbados, Sir Roy expressed concern that it was being accompanied by increasing levels of violence and “bestial behaviour”.

“Although the criminal mind does not always appear to respond to appeals, I would wish at this stage to appeal to those among us who believe that they are forced to go in the direction of crime, to understand that there is a better way,” he said.

Sir Roy urged: “Even when they (criminals) believe that they are not able to have earnings, then at least reduce the level of violence that goes with it and reduce the level of bestiality and mistreatment of elderly people and the young people particularly the young women.”

Sir Roy reminded shoppers that the pleasures of Christmas and “a good Old Year’s Night . . . the pretty shoes and beautiful dresses or coats will not be able to put food on the table for your children in January 2010″.

He therefore urged caution in spending over the next two weeks, with the reminder that “the enjoyment for a day will not in any way be able to compensate for the needs and the responsibilities you have towards your families particularly in the difficult months of January and February of 2010″.
