MORE BARBADIANS are about to secure jobs in the cruise industry.
Representatives of Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) are expected in Barbados tomorrow to sign contracts with a number of successful applicants for work on several of that line’s ships, while interviews will be conducted with many others.
Chief technical officer and director of maritime affairs at the Ministry of International Business and International Transport, Valerie Browne, recently told a Careers Showcase at the Barbados Coast Guard Headquarters that 272 applications had been received and processed for jobs on the NCL in September.
Browne said of that number, 84 people including 13 non-Barbadians had joined cruise ships and tankers while another 117 were awaiting finalisation of contracts.
Meanwhile, the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic has been approached by the NCL and has been assisting with sourcing prospective job recruits in several technical areas.
The polytechnic is presently reviewing its Maritime Training Programme in keeping with International Maritime Organisation Standards, and emphasis is being placed on the siting of a shipboard firefighting simulator to enhance training delivery.
A polytechnic official said management was aware there were exciting careers at sea. He suggested that with the prospect of offshore drilling operations for oil in the future, it was important to plan ahead and equip Barbadians for the various maritime job opportunities that could result. (GC)
