Ambassador Denis Kellman
Monday, June 15th, 2009Ambassador Denis St. Elmo Kellman was appointed Ambassador to CARICOM and Chief Negotiator in February 2008. Mr. Kellman, an accountant by profession, is also an entrepreneur, and has operated a small business since 1987. Mr. Kellman is beginning his fourth consecutive term as a Member of Parliament for the constituency of St. Lucy, having served three terms as an Opposition Member.
PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL:
Ambassador Denis St. Elmo Kellman was born in Barbados on January 25, 1958.
He has pursued academic qualification through BIMAP, New Jersey College and Certified General Accountants of Canada. However, the desire to own and operate his own business was strong and in February 1987, established St. Elmo’s, subsequently incorporated into St. Elmo’s Enterprises Inc. in September 1994. This business is currently operated under the ‘Moontown’ label and continues to be a thriving concern.
Prior to operating St. Elmo’s Enterprises Inc., Mr. Kellman served in the sugar industry, beginning as an office assistant at Haymans Factory in 1977 attaining the position of accountant at the industry’s head office until his resignation in 1994. He was also an active member of Sugar Industry Supervisors Association (SISA) and spearheaded the fight for the protection of pension rights of workers in the industry.
Since his elevation to Parliament, he has represented Barbados as a delegate at several Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) conferences in Australia, Canada, Bahamas, Belize, Nigeria and Trinidad and Tobago. His comments on Globalisation and Trade Liberalisation at the conference in the Bahamas received special mention on CNN in 2000. He is also a member of the Universal Federation of Peace, having attended conferences in the United States of America and Seoul, Korea.
Mr. Kellman has become known for his strong views on matters relating to both his constituency and his country and the conceptualisation of “Kellmanomics” a title so aptly provided at the time by an opposing Member of Parliament. These views have been captured since 2003 in his weekly articles under the heading “The Debate” in the Barbados Advocate Newspaper.
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Mr. Kellman has worked for many years in his community, as early as 1971. Prior to 1994, he served for a number of years on the executive of the St. Lucy Branch of the Democratic Labour Party. Between 1999 and 2001 he served as First Vice President and acted as President in 2001 of the Democratic Labour Party.
He has contributed to several community events, sports and social clubs. He was the first sponsor of Youth Milan Football Club. He was also instrumental in the restoration of Rockfield Community Centre and the development of North Stars Sports and Cultural Club. For the past fourteen (14) years, he has sponsored the St. Elmo’s St. Lucy Sports Competition in an effort to provide much needed financial assistance to clubs in the St. Lucy area.
Mr. Kellman is also a strong supporter of the Credit Union Movement.
FAMILY/RECREATION:
Mr. Kellman is married to Paulevette and is the father of two (2) sons Paul and Russell. His recreational activities include listening to music, playing games of dominoes, hearts and whist.
